How to Grow Pea Shoots

imagePea Shoots are rich in nutrients, easy to grow and very versatile to use in your kitchen. They smell & taste like peas and add great texture to your salads, sandwiches, soups and stirfrys. Fill them in an omelette, toss them with your fav pasta or add them to a green smoothie…you just can’t go wrong with them! 🙂
I’ve often been asked on pointers on how to grow them at home, so here’s how it’s done!

Had my kids grow their very own pea shoots, from start to finish….and it was wonderful to see their enthusiasm as they watched the little pea shoots, sprout and grow! When it was time to harvest…the kids loved cooking & eating the healthy rewards of their hard work! 🙂
STEP BY STEP….HOW TO GROW YOUR OWN PEA SHOOTS
Soaks dry green peas for 48 hours.

Fill your planting trays midway with soil and water them.

Place soaked peas in them. Place several in each section. You can put them fairly close to each other.

Cover the peas with a thin layer of soil.

Water them and place in a sunny spot.

Water every day for the next 3 weeks.

The pea shoots are ready to harvest when they become about 6 inches tall.

You will see that at the bottom of each shoot, new leaves are beginning to appear.

Take a sharp pair of scissors and snip just above the small new
Leaves growing near the base.

I like to snip only as much as I want to use….as they are best used fresh.

The pea shoot plants allow to be harvested atleast 2-3 times.
So keep the planting trays with small base leaves back in a sunny corner and continue to water them till they are ready to harvest again!
